Filipino Tribal Tattoos – Batok

Cultural Markings Through Ceremony

Batok Filipino Tribal tattoos are sacred cultural markings rooted in ancestry, care, and intention. Batok is known by different names throughout the Philippines, including Batek, Patik, Tatek and Burik, reflecting the many regions, languages, and traditions that make up Filipino Tribal tattooing. This hand tapped tattoo practice is not about proving identity or having perfect records. It is about connection, remembrance, and honoring where you come from, even if parts of that story feel distant or incomplete.

I am at the beginning of my journey into Batok, and I want to be transparent about that. I am actively learning, studying, and listening, and every ceremony I hold is part of that ongoing education. I approach this practice with humility, respect, and care, understanding that Batok is a living tradition with many teachers and lineages. Each session is not only a tattoo experience, but a chance for me to deepen my understanding, refine my approach, and continue honoring this cultural practice in a thoughtful and responsible way.

You Are Enough and Always Have Been

If you have any amount of Filipino lineage, you are enough.

Many people seeking Filipino Tribal tattoos are reconnecting with ancestry that was disrupted by colonization, migration, or family silence. Batok tattoos are cultural markings meant to reconnect you to yourself and your people, not something to earn or prove.

Many of us growing up You do not need to know everything about your family history to begin this journey. Showing up with respect, curiosity, and intention is what truly matters.

Traditional Tools With Modern Safety

Batok tattoos are traditionally hand tapped, and that practice is deeply honored here. At the same time, your safety is always the priority.

I use one time use sterile needles that are attached to traditional hand tapping tools, following professional tattoo safety standards throughout the entire process. Calamansi thorns may be used only if requested and if they are appropriate to the symbols, intention, and ceremony.

This allows the practice to remain rooted in tradition while being safe, ethical, and grounded in care.

Symbols Rooted in Ethnolinguistic Ancestry

You do not need a complete family tree or exact village names to receive meaningful cultural markings.

All I need is a general idea of where your ancestors or family come from, such as a region, island, or known ethnolinguistic group. From there, I thoughtfully choose symbols that are culturally appropriate and historically grounded.

Symbols may represent protection, resilience, family, nature, or ancestral guidance. Every design is intentional, personal, and created with deep respect for your connection to Filipino culture.

About The Ceremony

Batok is more than tattoos. It is ceremony.

Each session includes a food offering to honor ancestors, a small ritual using a candle and intention setting, a grounded conversation about symbols and design, and finally the hand tapped tattoo process.

The goal is to create a calm, respectful space where you feel present, supported, and connected throughout the experience.
