Have you ever wanted to have a brainstorming session with your favorite tattoo artist but were unsure on what information you should bring? Here’s a few tips on how you can get the tattoo of your dreams!
- Due-Diligence – Make sure you do your research and try to match up your favorite tattoo style with an artist of the same style. If you want a a ball gown you wouldn’t go to an athletic store, so don’t ask an artist for something they’re not comfortable with.
- Get a Measuring Tape – Use a measuring tape to measure your preferred area. Don’t use terms that have no relevance like “medium tattoo” or “How much for a sleeve”. The other option would be to let your artist decide the size of your piece or ask to fill an entire area, I.E. sleeve, half sleeve or leg panel.
- Choose 1-3 topics – This is dependent on your artist, but choosing a main subject matter and 2 or 3 at the most secondary subject matter will help your artist design something that is dynamic with good visual hierarchy. This could be a fox with 3 types of flowers, a cat with a mouse and a witches hat, A chrysanthemum, with leaves and filigree.
- Artist Preference is King – If you can’t visualize a part or most of your idea, it’s ok. If you love the artist’s work, let them have reign over the majority of your design and you will get something uniquely collaborated.
- Be okay with Change – Go in to a Custom Tattoo Consultation with the idea that you will receive a customized design that is made for you from someone who will put many hours designing and executing this to the best of their ability. A professional artist will try and execute your vision but choose to make changes that will benefit the placement, longevity and overall design in a way that you could never know, without years of experience as a tattoo artist. Trust the process and most of the time it will work out in your favor.
